The main objective of the project is to provide additional water supply to the Greater Amman area from a fossil water source in the Rum aquifer (Disi), a distance of more than 300km from the capital. This additional water from Jordan’s last reserve should cover part of the substantially increasing municipal water demands in the project area. The project consists of conveying 100 MCM/yr of water through a pipeline of 2000mm diameter at a total dynamic head of about 800m..
The project was carried out in two stages. The scope of work of Stage I included conceptual design including various alternatives and scenarios, socio-economic and feasibility studies, environmental assessment, engineering designs and evaluation of alternative options for development and financing the project including options for BOT/BOO schemes.
The project also involved estimating municipal water demands in the study area, review of new water rights arising from the peace treaty, hydro-geological studies, review of current institutional arrangements, assessment of water tariffs and pipeline design including well field works, pumping /pressure control stations and reservoirs.
Stage II of the project involved detailed design and preparation of complete tender documents for 82 wells, 200km of well-field collectors, Pump Station No.1 including collector reservoir, chlorination generators, workshop, administration and residential buildings, Pump Station No.2, regulating tank of 85,000m3-capacity at Batn El-Ghoul, terminal reservoir of 150,000m3-capacity at Abu Alanda in Amman, booster station for Dabouk, conveyance pipeline of 2000mm diameter of 300km length, telemetry and SCADA system.
