WASTE WATER COLLECTION, TREATMENT & EFFLUENT REUSE FOR NORTH JORDAN VALLEY COMMUNITIES - JORDAN

  Project Name:

WASTE WATER COLLECTION, TREATMENT & EFFLUENT REUSE FOR NORTH JORDAN VALLEY COMMUNITIES - JORDAN

Client:

Water Authority of Jordan
Funding Agency: USAID

Project Description: Design and supervision of construction of a wastewater collection system, treatment plant and effluent re-use for agricultural areas. The project serves 16 communities from North Shuna to Sleikhat. The length of trunk sewer is around 40km with diameters ranging between 400mm to 900mm. Pump stations were designed along the trunk sewer to link the several gravity sewer and force main sections together, and to convey the raw sewage to the WWTP. This plant will be designed for an average flow of 8,000m³/d for Phase 1 in the year 2010 and 12,000m³/d in the year 2020 which will use extended aeration activated sludge treatment process. The treated effluent will be reused for unrestricted irrigation in the Jordan Valley.
This project aims at improving the health and living standards of the residents, protect the environment including the surface water and groundwater resources, reclaim and re-use of treated effluent for irrigation and to allow for the safe and orderly development of the affected communities and towns, as per the 1994 Peace Treaty.
Environmental impact assessment for the project was conducted in accordance with the USAID Environmental Regulations stipulated in 22 CFR 216.  The significant environmental issues were identified during an environmental scoping session and other scoping activities.  The Environmental Impact Assessment will identify and evaluate potential impacts on the environment of the wastewater collection, treatment and re-use system, assess the seriousness and likelihood of the impacts, propose mitigation measures and identify areas where monitoring work is required
