The Preliminary Study for Iraq Reconstruction Project is financed by a grant from the Japanese Government. The project included surveys to cover basic human needs and infrastructure rehabilitation in Iraq. Mainly four sectors were covered by this survey; namely: Water and Sanitation, Education (which covered schools, vocational schools and technical Institutes), Electricity; and Procurement & Logistics.
Several teams were assigned to conduct the survey comprising Iraqi engineers and specialists in each sector to complete the required services within the short duration allocated for the project. The teams were supervised by a senior engineer from CC office who visited Iraq to train the different teams and ensure that accomplished work is up to clients satisfaction.The survey covered different governorates in Iraq from north to south. The following is a description of services covered in each sector:
1. Water and Sanitation Sector
The survey covered the required Compact Water Treatment Units and Reverse Osmosis Units in three Governorates: Baghdad, Maisan and Basra as well as identifying required equipment for Pump Station T1 which is part of the waste water treatment plant in Baghdad.
2. Electricity Sector
The Survey covered the following:
• The existing conditions of the 400kV and 132kV transmission lines in Iraq which were identified on a grid map.
• The operating conditions of the 400kV and 132kV substations in Iraq. 25 substations were assessed covering the following area: Baghdad, Samara, Ana, Ba’quoba, Diwaniya, Kerbala, Samawa.
• The operating condition of four major power plants and their generating capabilities: Mosul Gas Turbine, Mosul Hydropower, Taji; and Al-Mussaiab.
3. Domestic Material and Equipment Transportation Survey
The survey covered two sectors: Logistics and Procurement. Applicable laws and regulations were identified as well as identifying active consultants and contractors and required security measures to ensure delivery of equipment to required locations.
4. Education Sector
• The survey included required equipment rehabilitation for 10 vocational schools in Baghdad: 5 schools in Russafa and 5 schools in Karkh.
• The survey for primary and intermediate schools in Baghdad which were earmarked for demolition and reconstruction.
• The survey to identify required equipment for four technical institutes in Najaf, Amara, Kirkuk and Za’afaraniah.
